2018 – N2Women: Stars in Computer Networking and Communications

We are very excited to announce the third list of “N2Women: Stars in Computer Networking and Communications”. This year, we selected the three top candidates. We focused on women who have had a major impact in networking and/or communications. We also wanted a list that represented our diversity, e.g., diversity in the area of networking/communications and, thus, chose the list accordingly.

For 2018, in alphabetical order (by last name), here are 3 Stars in Computer Networking and Communications!

  Sujata Banerjee

Senior Staff Researcher at VMWare Research

http://www.banerjee.net/

Sujata Banerjee is at VMware Research as a senior staff researcher with responsibility as a research director for VMware external research programs. Prior to joining VMware in January 2017, she was a distinguished technologist and research director at Hewlett Packard Enterprise Labs. Before HP Labs, she also enjoyed an academic career at the University of Pittsburgh, where she was a tenured associate professor. Her expertise is in topics related to software defined networking and network functions virtualization, and she is broadly interested in network automation and performance.

Sujata has authored more than 100 papers on software defined networking and network functions virtualization. Her leading work has earned best paper awards and the NSF Career award in networking research. She has managed the network systems research group at HPE labs, leading to foundational technologies, tens of patents, and transfers to HP products. I am inspired by her deep technical knowledge, strong career path, and mentoring guidance. She is a great role model!

Carla Fabiana Chiasserini

Associate Professor at Electronics and Telecommunications Department at Politecnico di Torino

https://www.telematica.polito.it/public/faculty/carla-fabiana-chiasserini

Carla-Fabiana Chiasserini has been with the Electronics and Telecommunications Department at Politecnico di Torino, where she is currently an Associate Professor. Before her current appointment, she worked at the Politecnico di Torino under a Cselt (now TELECOM ITALIA) grant on wireless ATM networks (1996) and with a short-term position as an Assistant Professor (2000-2002). From 1998 till 2003, she did research work at the Center for Wireless Communications and at the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, University of California at San Diego.

She is an IEEE Fellow (class of 2018) and she is in the list of top Italian scientists kept by VIAAcademy. Her research interests are mainly in the field of wireless and mobile networks. She has published over 290 papers, among which more than 90 in highly prestigious refereed journals, and she has received several Best Paper Awards.

Her outstanding research activity on Wireless Communication Networks and Mobile Applications. Her results in (i) analytical modelling and performance characterization; and in (ii) architecture, protocol and algorithm design; can be considered as milestones in the field. Her pioneering study on cooperation in distributed wireless networks through the lens of game theory, along with her results on energy-efficient wireless networks, has had a great impact on the scientific community.

Dr. Zheng joined the Lehigh faculty in 2018. She works on several areas of research with a focus on underwater cyber-physical systems. Her research has been funded by National Science Foundation (NSF), Office of Naval Research (ONR), US Department of Transportation (DoT), Air Force Research Laboratory, and Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR). She has published more than 70 journal papers and more than 120 conference papers. She is an IEEE fellow of class 2015.

Dr. Rosa Zheng is a Fellow of IEEE and Distinguished Lecturer of Vehicular Technology Society. She specializes in underwater wireless communications, underwater sensor networks, and underwater cyber physical systems. She loves to teach new courses and solve tough engineering problems in the real world.

Dr. Rosa Zheng is a professor at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA, USA. She specializes in underwater wireless communications, underwater sensor networks, and underwater cyber physical systems. Her Turbo equalization algorithms have been tested in more than 20 ocean experiments, which improve the data rate of underwater acoustic communication by 50 times over existing methods. She has published more than 200 papers in refereed journals and conferences. She was a recipient of an NSF Career Award in 2009. She is a Fellow of IEEE and Distinguished Lecturer of Vehicular Technology Society.
